SBD are now being supported by Gold Label Tackle who are supplying line from their fantastic range. Sierra Brava has a boat ban so casting is required. The lakebed has many jagged rocks, and Spanish oak trees are in abundance. I therefore require a line that has great abrasion resistance, has excellent knot strength, and in particular casts well, but is forgiving at the same time.
After chatting with Rob Eustace of GLT he suggested using Pro-Gold in the 15lb breaking strain, combined with a 27lb shock-leader from the Pro-Tough range. Pro Gold’s advanced Co-Polymer technology offers up to 100 times more abrasion resistance than other leading mono's. High knot strength and a good shock absorbency allow Po Gold to be used with total confidence whether at extreme range or under the rod tip. The Shimano 10000 Baitrunner spools have now been loaded up and I am supremely confident that Gold Label Tackle is the right choice for SBD.
After fishing at Sierra Brava many times now I can be really honest and tell you that I have not actually lost many rigs in snags, or lost many fish during fights. I always lift the rod high and reel quickly when retrieving, and when playing fish, I take my time, and apply very careful pressure if the fish needs stopping. I myself will be using the Pro-Clear in 12 and 16lb versions. With its low diameter Gold Label Pro Clear performs exceptionally on fixed spool reels and offers superb casting performance matched with a high abrasion resistance, low memory and high knot strength. I am also going to begin testing some GLT hooks at Sierra Brava. Anyone will know that I have always liked big hooks that match bait size. I always fish with big fish in mind and will therefore use sizes 2 or bigger in some cases. I have had a couple of stop start takes at Sierra Brava which I put down to the soft mouths the carp seem to have, but have never had a hook pull whilst playing a fish – I am positive this is down to the choice of hook. I will be trying out the Flexi-Swivel Penetrator and Penetrator Two hooks in sizes 2 and 1. I will keep you posted about my results and feedback.
